Highlights of the 2003 - 2004 report:

Education - The Environmental and Spatial Technologies Initiative (EAST) continues to expand at a phenomenal rate. EAST began in 1996, and is now found in 141 schools in Arkansas, 48 in California, 13 in Illinois, 7 in Hawaii, and 4 in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. This was the first full year of use of the new Northwest Arkansas EAST Training Center here in Ozark Hall, made possible by support from the Provost and EAST. CAST in collaboration with Moments Productions is developing three short (3-5 minute) demos of entertaining animated physical science education programming for HDTV. The
objective of this pilot project is to determine if student interns can be used to form a core development group to develop animated projects in Northwest Arkansas. During fiscal year 03-04, a total of 777 active
computer accounts (up from 369 last year) were in place to allow access to CAST hardware and software by students, researchers, faculty, and staff.

Research - The total amount of externally-funded Research Grants awarded to CAST during Fiscal Year 2003-2004 was $2,055,544.00. A list of grants awarded during the fiscal year can be found in the Research section. A list of projects awarded in previous years, but still active during Fiscal Year 2003-2004, is also included. With support from the National Science Foundation, CAST received $495,216.00
to support the HARLS-CS project. HARLS-CS is an integrated suite of instruments designed to rapidly and accurately characterize the topographic and multi-spectral properties of the surfaces of relatively small areas and structures at very high resolution. For over ten years CAST has continued its collaborative research efforts to identify, quantify, and analyze wetland resources across Arkansas. The
Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission continues to support these efforts.

Public Service - The Arkansas Atlas, a demonstration project developed by CAST in conjunction with federal, state, local, and private organizations, offers users access to economic information for 100 cities and all 75 counties within Arkansas. GeoStor is a comprehensive, enterprise geospatial geodata system, including web-based data search and delivery, support for multiple enterprise applications, and an integrated Oracle enterprise-class distributed database architecture. The system currently includes all publicly available locationbased geodata for the State of Arkansas. CAST's website continues to expand in the quality and quantity of data it contains and in the ease of access to that data. While most website accesses come from the U.S., the site is utilized by students, the public, and researchers from around the world. The CAST website has an average of 32,000 hits per day.
