Bottomley, Brandon

Provided tour, demonstration, and materials to Dr. Buell's Physical Geography students from the Northwest Arkansas Community College. February 4, 1999.

Presented the final results of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley of Arkansas - Land-use/Land-cover project to 18 officials of the Arkansas Soil and Water Conservation Commission. February 9, 1999.

Assisted with demonstration of GIS/GPS technologies to 40 junior high and high school students who were on campus to participate in the Science Fair held at UAF. March 5, 1999.

Participated in the Remote Sensing for Agriculture and Natural Resources SRIEG99 Conference in Huntsville, Alabama. May 19-21, 1999.

Brandon, R. Joe

Provided a tour and demonstration to Jim Smith of the University of Sydney, Australia. Smith gave an informal public lecture describing the current situation existing in Queensland.

Brooks, Thomas

Traveled to Lawrence, Kansas, to make a presentation at the University of Kansas on conservation priorities for Mexican Birds. November 18-20, 1998.

Attended and participated in meetings in Arlington, Virginia, at The Nature Conservancy. Work focused on proposal-writing and fundraising efforts. November 25, 1998-January 3, 1999.

Participated in The Nature Conservancy meeting in Biloxi, Mississippi, to discuss Migratory Birds. January 28-31, 1999.

 Lead person in planning of a Special Biodiviersity Seminar by Dr. Paul Williams of the Natural History Museum, London, United Kingdom, held in Fayetteville this year. February 12-14, 1999. 

Presented an on-campus talk about his work with threatened bird species and spatial technologies. February 23, 1999.

Catanzaro, Donald

Participated in the final Arkansas GAP in-state cooperators meetings at the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commissions in Little Rock. Participating cooperators included the Arkansas Forestry Commission, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Nature Conservancy Field Office, US Forest Service, and University of Arkansas-Monticello. An overview of the Arkansas GAP project final report CD-ROM set and on-line web pages (www.cast.uark.edu/gap/) was provided. July 30, 1998.

Culpepper, Brian

Taught a GeoMedia short-course at Intergraph Corporate Training Facility in Huntsville, Alabama. This three-day course was attended by 14 IT/GIS professionals from across the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia. This course served as a "train the trainers" course, and existing Intergraph trainers were asked to observe and evaluate the class and the training manual (both developed by CAST staff) in order raise the classroom standards within their own facility. July 7-9, 1998.

Provided GIS overview to a group of fifteen High School teachers from Arkansas and Louisiana. The teachers were given an overview of the basic GIS technologies and applications and then participated in a hands-on exercise. GeoMedia 2.0 GIS software was used along with Washington County, Arkansas, datasets. July 14-15, 1998.

Attended the Source Water Protection Project Cooperators meeting in Little Rock to provide GIS information to aid in the development of assessment models for all public water sources for Arkansas. The goal of this model is to define and rank the relative risk of contamination of each of the Arkansas public water sources. July 21, 1998.

Attended the Source Water Protection Technical Advisory Committee meeting at the Arkansas Department of Health in Little Rock. Comments and recommendations concerning public water systems assessment methodology were given. The Technical Advisory Committee includes volunteers from around the state, most of which are managers of public water facilities; others are concerned citizens that are knowledgeable of water quality issues. July 30, 1998. 

Attended a presentation of the Arkansas House and Senate district mapping project, developed with the help of CAST staff, given by Secretary of State Sharon Priest to the Washington County Quorum Court in Fayetteville. August 5, 1998. 

Attended the Source Water Assessment Citizens Advisory Committee meetings at the Arkansas Department of Health in Little Rock. Topics of discussion included the status of the assessment model. August 6, 1998.

Presented a tour and description of CAST and CAST's research, training, and mission to the fall 1998 UAF Anthropology graduate students. August 20, 1998.

Taught an MGE Foundations on-site short-course at Wellsco Graphics Solutions, Inc. in Paragould, Arkansas. September 7-11, 1998.

Attended U.S. IGUG Conference in Ames, Iowa. Highlights included discussions on legislative redistricting, a presentation on the National Association of Counties/Intergraph GIS Starter Kit for counties, the announcement of the Inside GeoMedia book scheduled to be published in 1998, and the release of GeoMedia campus-wide licensing protocols. October 4-6, 1998.

Attended Source Water Protection Project Technical Advisory Committee meetings in Little Rock. A public presentation of the current assessment methodology was made to 35 participants. October 28, 1998.

Provided copy of Assessing the Condition of American Civil War Battlefields to a master's student in Archaeology at the University of South Florida to be used as a model to assess the Seminole War Battlefields in Florida. November 9, 1998. 

Facilitated meetings with Bob Joseph of USGS and Lyle Godfred of the Arkansas Department of Health. November 19-20, 1998. 

Provided demonstrations and met with Communications Coordinator Eric Lancaster of Arkansas Department of Information Services. January 22, 1999.

Traveled to Bentonville to participate in talks and tour of Wal-Mart Information Technologies facilities. January 22, 1999.

Participated in meetings at USGS offices in Little Rock. Project leaders met to review sample maps for approximately 200 sample water system maps produced at CAST. February 9, 1999. 

Gave a demonstration and tour for officials of the Beaver Water District on how GIS can benefit water districts. February 11, 1999.

Provided a taped interview for KFSM TV weatherman Jay Hilgarten to be included in a special weather segment about tornadoes and the cooperative efforts of CAST and the Tulsa Weather Service. Officials of the Tulsa Weather Service were also here for the taping. February 12, 1999.  

Participated in Land Information Board meetings in Little Rock. February 24, 1999. 

Met with two prospective UAF engineering students from Arkadelphia informing them about what CAST has to offer UAF students. February 19, 1999.

Assited Jessica King, GIS Coordinator for the City of Arkadelphia, Arkansas, with future GIS plans and director. February, 1999.

Delivered three statewide datasets to Elena Robisch at the Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District, office. February, 1999. 

Consulted via telephone with Doug Bruton, Bruton Information Systems of Dallas, Texas, about Web GIS topics. February, 1999. 

Provided Dr. Kvamme, UAF Department of Anthropology, all of the digital data created for the Prairie Grove Battlefield to assist their archeological research project and possible publication. Feburary, 1999.

Provided Connie Marini of EDR and Associates of Boston with GPA vegetation and vertebrate species distribution data for the state in the appropriate GIS format. February, 1999.

Volunteered to Assist Dr. Roger Williams with development of Arkansas Media Maps dataset to assist his office with the public Relations of the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. Dr. Williams is the Associate Vice Chancellor for Univ. Relations. February, 1999. 

Gave Nancy Talbert of Academic Affairs some direction to obtaining the Arkansas Legislative District Maps from our web page. March, 1999. 

Conducted a project for the University Admissions office, related to the use of GIS technologies for their Student Recruiting Efforts. March, 1999. 

Contacted the Secretary of State's office and David Harp, Election Commissioner for Sebastian Co. regarding an issue related to district boundary confusion within Fort Smith, AR. Mike Garner and I traveled to Fort Smith to Collect data from other city/county offices and provided a detailed map to David Harp (at no charge) that cleared up the confusing boundary between two district boundaries. This issue was aired on the local news and I followed up with these people to offer our technical assistance. March, 1999.

Visited for 1/2 day with Robert Still of Pea Ridge National Military Park about his upcoming GIS data conversion issues regarding the 1956 historic land ownership map of the park. March, 1999.

Met with the Source Water Assessment Project team members from the USGS and Dept. of Health in Fayetteville regarding project status and deliverables. March, 1999. 

Provided Wellsco Graphic Solutions with three counties of USGS DRG data in support of the EAST program. March, 1999.

Provided Mike Bayless of the Missouri Conservation Dept. with digital copies of the Arkansas GAP datasets. March, 1999.

Traveled to the state capitol to answer questions regarding CAST's role in the EAST program for interested legislators. March, 1999.

Arranged for Wal-Mart's ISD recruiting team to present their use of Information Technologies/ GIS to interested students from our GIS for Business class/Geography/ Anthropology/Geology. Reserved Rm. 25 in Ozark Hall for the two hour, public presentation. Students were encouraged to sign-up for Wal-Mart's on-campus recruiting day that was scheduled for a later date. March, 1999.

Spoke with Kenneth Colbert of the Arkanas Forestry Comm. About a statewide assessment of the "Urban Fringe" for the entire state of Arkansas. He needed an answer that same day, and I told him it wasn't that easy. He was needing this information to support some proposed legislative initiatives. March, 1999.

Coauthored an Intergraph White Paper with Jim and Fred for Intergraph to use in support of an NRCS contract with the Federal Gov. The focus of the paper was Intergraph's Interoperability

Advantages within the GIS industry. April, 1999. 

Provided John Lewis, president of the Bank of Fayetteville, with an open invitation to discuss CAST's research efforts. He later visited CAST with Bryan Vowels and Terry Dugan so that Fred, Jim, and I could present our Business GIS research work to them. April, 1999.

Attended the EPA/AWRC joint conference at the Fayetteville Hilton and presented a poster entitled: Spatial Data Development Methods for the Arkansas Source Water Protection Project. The poster was authored by John Wilson, Linda Fye and Brian Culpepper. April, 1999.

Consulted with Jennifer Guerin, an intern at the Manassas National Battlefield Park in Virginia regarding viewshed analysis within a Civil War Battlefield setting. I directed her to our web page contents that were relevant to her interest and provided some free advice for her future research at Manassas Battlefield. April, 1999. 

Attended Intergraph IGUG 1999 Conference in Huntsville, Alabama. May, 1999.

Fred and Brian met with Secretary of State, Sharon Priest and other staff members regarding the Census 2000 and the statewide redistricting project to follow. We've made plans to assist her office with technical expertise regarding GIS technologies required to conduct said redistricting project. May, 1999.

Provided tour of CAST's facilities and research initiatives with three members of the Argentian government. May, 1999. 

Planned and Participated in the first CADIS meeting at the Genesis Business incubation office. May, 1999. 

Served on a discussion panel with various deans and professors from the College of Engineering and Arts and Sciences during a visit from officials from the Saudia Arabian/Univ. of Arkansas program to discuss shared or common education issues between our two universities and countries. May 28, 1999.

Assisted Jim Farley and Malcolm Williamson with a private tour of CAST's Facilities our Saudi Arabian Visitors on Saturday, May 29, 1999. 

Provided Dr. Bill Schwab of the Sociology dept with some requested demographic maps of Baxter and Marion Counties in Arkansas to support a highway re-routing project he is involved with in that area. I created several 8.5 x 11 color maps for his review; then gave him a demonstration of a desktop GIS package and loaned him our Census Data CD so that he could conduct further research at his leisure. He was accompanied by a graduate assistant, Aaron Scott. May, 1999. 

Attended a presentation by the Arkansas Dept. of Econ. Development (ADED) at the Genesis Center (with Jim Farley) to assess that agencies goals so that our CADIS efforts will also meet their needs; or at least provide appropriate examples for which they may follow. June, 1999.

Hosted four representatives from the Oklahoma Dept. of Environmental Quality along with five members of the Arkansas Source Water Protection Project team members (USGS/Dept. of Health/AWRC/CAST) at CAST's facilities to discuss cooperation between the two states regarding watershed's that cross these state boundaries. June, 1999.

Represented CAST at an All-Day "Information Technologies Recruitment Day" at the Wal-Mart Corp. Offices in Bentonville along with approx. 40 representatives from various universities in this region. Wal-Mart's CIO, Randy Mott, addressed the crowd and along with other Wal-Mart executives, discussed their company's recruitment needs within the IT related professions and particularly what they were looking for in recent graduates. June, 1999.

Presented the final project results from the first "GIS for Business" course offered from CAST last Spring to the Recruiting staff of the University Admissions office per the request of the Office's Director Maribeth Lynes. Her staff of eight were impressed with what our students were able to accomplish and they are very interested in future research and the use of GIS technologies within their office. Maribeth wishes to pursue future student projects if our class is offered again. June, 1999.

Presented an Overview of GIS technologies (45 min) with regard to Business applications to a group of 30+ over in the Reynolds Center (College of Business Administration) for Rita Littrell.

The focus of the one week conference was to educate a group of Arkansas School Teachers about Economic Development within their communities. June, 1999.

Dzur, Robert

Participated in the final Arkansas GAP in-state cooperators meetings at the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commissions in Little Rock. Participating cooperators included the Arkansas Forestry Commission, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Nature Conservancy Field Office, US Forest Service, and University of Arkansas-Monticello. Mr. Dzur presented an overview of the Arkansas GAP project final report CD-ROM set and on-line web pages (www.cast.uark.edu /gap/). July 30, 1998.

Farley, James

Attended the NSF Digital Government in Arlington, Virginia, prepared by the National Research Council, the National Science and Technology Council, and the National Science Foundation. This initiative was made up of a broad representation from industry, government, and academia. Recommendations for structuring the program in future years to ensure its rapid growth and specific input into the process over the next year are summarized in a report. Invited participant in a workshop of fifty specialists evaluating alternative IT strategies and the increased use of geospatial data as a means of improving the efficiency of decision making in government. July 7-9, 1998.

Participated in four-day Oracle 8.1 Beta Training provided by Oracle Corporation in San Francisco. This meeting was for all organizations that agreed to beta test Oracle products.

This comprehensive training program included an overview of changes in server technology, warehousing, parellel servers, PL/SQL, and Oracle Call Level Interface (CLI) interfaces, object extensions, CORBA, and Java. July 26-31, 1998.

Participated in OpenGIS technical Committee meetings in Springfield, Virginia. Meetings featured SIG, WWW mapping SIG, and transfer technology SIG. Preliminary discussions were held with NASA, Oracle, Lockheed-Martin, and OGC staff in regard to establishing a collaborative team to respond to the OGC RFP for Simple Rasters. Under this proposal CAST would facilitate on behalf of a group that would work to create the first COTS implementation of the OGC specification for Simple Rasters. Upon completion CAST would serve as a reference site for this technology which would be imbedded in the SWAG warehouse. August 3-6, 1998.

Attended meetings in Washington for four days. A number of topics were covered including project and system design for the upcoming NPS Ethnographics Resources Inventory database; status and new initiatives regarding the National Archeological Database project and project close-out in regard to the NPS FIND-IT database developed in association with the NPS-CRG. Washington, D.C. September 7-11, 1998.

Attended the FGDC project kickoff meeting which was a part of our current FGDC award to develop an FGDC Clearinghouse for Arkansas. All fifty states were represented at this conference. The meetings consisted of two days of presentations and discussions. I presented the Arkansas Clearinghouse Project as part of these discussions. Charleston, South Carolina. September 20-24, 1998. 

Attended the OGC Technical Committee meeting. Participated in discussions and working groups related metadata, services architecture, coverages, catalogs and simple features. In addition, I attended the WWW Mapping spcial interest group and began work leading to the creation of a Disaster management SIG in the Consortium. Vienna, Austria. October 3-10, 1998. 

Hosted tour and talks with senior representative of ESRI, David McGuire. Possible future relationships and possible CAST input in regard to future product development were discussed. October 23, 1998.

Attended meetings at both Ameican University Beirut and Lebanese American University as part of an outreach initiative for the University, the Middle East Studies program, CAST and the ENDY program. Formal presentations to groups of 40-70 educators and both private and public sector groups were made at both schools. Beirut, Lebanon. November 6-8, 1998. 

Attended meetings and made formal presentations to educators, scientists and senior administrators at 3 of the four major Universities in the Kingdom (Saud, Fahd, Abdulaziz) and at the the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology in Riyadh. These presentations were part of an outreach initiative for the University directed towards developing new relationships and collaborative projects between the University and the region. Jeddah and Dhahran, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. November 8-15, 1998.

Attended meetings and made formal presentations to educators, scientists, senior administrators and representatives from both the public and private sector during a three day period. Presentations were made at the Higher College of Technology, the Center for Research and Applied Technology and before the President of the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and the Indian Business Association. These presentations were part of an outreach initiative for the University directed towards developing new relationships and collaborative projects between the University and the region. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. November 16-19, 1998.

Attended a National Park Service project planning meeting for the design and deployment of the Ethnographic Resources Inventory Database. A commitment of funds was secured to support CAST work on this project. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. December 1-4, 1998. 

Attended Governor's presentation and meetings about the Middle East project in Chicago. December 3-4, 1998.

Attended the OGC Technical Committee meeting. Participated in discussions and working groups related to metadata, services architecture, coverages, catalogs, and simple features. In addition, I attended the WWW Mapping special interest group. Materials I developed in collaboration with personnel from the USGS and the National Science Foundation were used to establish a Disaster Management Special Interest group in the Consortium. Mountain View, California. December 6-11, 1999. 

Participated in OpenGIS Technical Committee meetings in San Jose, California. December 7-11, 1998. 

Held meetings and provided demonstrations for Craig Brown, UAF Computing Services, and Jim Davis of Bay Networks. Discussions were held about the possibility of providing CAST with network upgrades for officer and labs. December 14, 1998.

Attended the 1999 Conference on the Applications of Remote Sensing and GIS for Disaster Management hosted by The George Washington University. A paper co-authored by myself and Louis Hecht of the OpenGIS Consortium is included in the proceedings, this paper is entitled Building Infrastructure for Disaster Management Using OpenGIS Technologies. Washington, D.C. January 18-21, 1999.

Facilitated visit by Ben Clue of Arkansas USDA. February 2, 1999.

Participated in meetings with key people from USGS's Biological Informatics Unit from Denver and Washington DC. February 3-4, 1999.

Attended the OpenGIS Consortium Technical Committee meetings in Atlanta and participated in a number of working group including web mapping, metadata, disaster management, the simple feature and catalog working groups and coverage's. I prepared a series of scenarios for the disaster management SIG and led much of the discussion in that group. February 7-12, 1999. 

Attended a day-long session organized by David Maguire, Director of Operations and Ed Crane Regional Manager, Midwest to discuss ESRI technology and to identify and agree on a formal relationship between CAST and ESRI. Presentations were provided by each of the Product Managers for ESRI's suite of software. An agreement in priciple and the general language of the agreement were considered and accepted. The outgrowth of this relationship will provide CAST and the ENDY/Geosciences programs with access to all ESRI technology at little or no cost. Redlands, California. February 24-26, 1999.

Attended the Computerworld-Smithsonian Awards ceremonies to accept the award that the SWAG project was nominated for by Larry ellison of Oracle Corporation. The award was made in the category of Academics and Education in the IT Innovators class. Washington, D.C. April 11-12, 1999.

Served as an American Delegate to the 1999 Conference of Experts on the Global Disaster Information Network (GDIN). Thirteen countries, the United Nations, the World Bank, and a large number of public sector and NGO relief agencies. Mexico City, Mexico. May 11-14, 1999.

Attended FGDC meetings in Portland, Orogon. May 17-19, 1999. 

Participated in OpenGIS Technical Committee meetings in Enschede, The Netherlands. I was involved in a number of working group sessions including web mapping, metadata, semantics, and disaster management. I presented two discussion papers, and met with representatives from PCI Geomatics, Oracle, and Sum Microsystems to discuss closer relationships with CAST. April 17-25, 1999. 

Provided a private tour of CAST for Chancellor White and Saudi Arabian Minister of Higher Education His Excellency (HE) Khalid Al-Ankary as part of the Saudi delegations visit to the University. HE is a geographer and is familiar with Remote Sensing. The objective of this meeting was to inform the Minster of the capabilities available at the Center and to discuss the model that has been used to establish and integrate the Center in the University community. Both the Minister and the Chancellor were highly complimentary of the Center and its work. A 30 minute discussion was followed by an hour long tour of the Center. Demonstrations (Anne Gisiger)of photogrametry featuring images from Petra in southern Jordan were followed by demonstrations of the NRCS soils atlas and the online mapper. The tour concluded in with a brief presentation and a tour of CAST's Middle East web site. May 28, 1999. 

Approximately 20 senior members of the Saudi Arabian delegation from the Ministry of Higher Education participated in a tour the Center and its facilities. CAST was honored as a tour stop for the entire delegation. All other campus facility tours were scheduled to run concurrently and the delegates needed to select which of a number of options they would attend. Participants included Deans and Program Directors from the four major Saudi Universities (Faisal, Fahd, Saud and Abdul-Aziz). A brief tour of the CAST labs and a number of projects was provided to our guests. A short powerpoint presentation featuring new cast initiatives including Aurora, CADIS, GDIN etc was followed by a "user" driven tour of CAST's Middle East web page. May 29, 1999.

Garner, Michael

Provided GPS overview to a group of fifteen High School teachers from Arkansas and Louisiana. The teachers were given an overview of the basic GPS technologies and applications and then participated in a hands-on exercise. Trimble Navigation hand-held GPS GeoExplorer units were used. July, 1998.

Provided GPS talk and demonstration to participants of the UAF Department of Geography's Geography Institute held at CAST facilities. This event was sponsored by the Arkansas Geographic Alliance. July 20-24, 1998. 

Made a GPS presentation to UAF Professor Dr. John Dixon's geography class. December 8, 1998. 

Built a database of newspapers/television/radio coverage elements for Roger Williams, Vice Chancellor, University Relations Department, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. February, 1999.

Gisiger, Anne

Participated in four-day Oracle 8.1 Beta Training provided by Oracle Corporation in San Francisco. This meeting was for all organizations that agreed to beta test Oracle products.

Participated in meetings with Veletta Canouts, Terry Childs, Jennifer Schansberg, and Larry Karr of the National Park Service, Washington, D.C., and Dick Black and Laura Wells of the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. Discussions were held about technical issues, exchange of information, and support for a grant to build an oral history Native American lands map of the U.S. and the methodology for presenting this information and tribal repatriation contact information on the web. October 6, 1998. 

Provided demonstration for National Merit scholars and parents who toured CAST and received an several demonstrations and educational materials. Demonstrations on GIS 3-D technologies, GPS, the GAP Project, and agriculture mapping and inundation. October 30, 1998. 

Provided demonstration for Vicksburg, Mississippi, Corp of Engineers staff and two consultants from Jackson State University. Their interests are cultural resource management in the Red River area. November 4, 1998.

Provided a tour and demonstration for Stigler Lecturer Dr. Richard Potts, Director of the Human Origins Program, and Curator of the Department of Anthropology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Demonstrations provided included archaeological and anthropological applications, including photogrametric work, dental topographic analysis, CNPO, and others. November 19, 1998.

Provided demonstration for Vicksburg, Mississippi, Corp of Engineers staff and two consultants from Jackson State University. Their interests are cultural resource management in the Red River area. November 4, 1998.

Provided demonstration for Craig Brown, UAF Computing Services, and Jim Davis of Bay Networks. Discussions were held about the possibility of providing CAST with network upgrades for officer and labs. December 14, 1998.

We were assisted by Ben Farley, a student out of the Fayetteville High School FASST Lab (EAST program). May 20, 1999. 

Hosted a group of 50 thirteen to fifteen year-olds from various areas of Arkansas. These students are visiting several Arkansas universities in an effort to acquaint these students with the possibilities in higher education. June 9, 1999.

Provided CAST tour and demonstration given to group from Rogers Public Library. Interested in our map production capabilities and South American Bird project. July 17, 1998. 

Participated in Land Information Board July meetings. Significant events included the announcement of the new position of State Land Information Coordinator of the Department of Information Services. Mr. Johnson presented a discussion on the possibility of CAST serving as the state's digital data repository that could be made possible through SWAG funding. July, 1998.

Provided CAST tour and demonstration for nine area Girl Scouts and three sponsors from Fayetteville, Siloam Springs, Harrison, Lowell, Eureka Springs, Bella Vista, Springdale, and Berryville. Central focus of these 14- to 16-year old girls is to plan and create a biological inventory for a campsite and to learn about careers in technology. They will explore orienteering, tree and plant identification, bird identification, and do some basic work in ArcView, create webpages, and possibly produce a virtual trail guide. July 20, 1998. 

Provided GIS talk and demonstration to participants of the UAF Department of Geography's Geography Institute held at CAST facilities. This event was sponsored by the Arkansas Geographic Alliance. July 20-24, 1998.

Presented a GIS demonstration and discussion of CAST activities to ten educators from Hope, Texarkana, Russellville, and Fort Smith at Camp Clearfork, Arkansas. August 3, 1998.  

Participated in Land Information Board, sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Information Services, meeting in Little Rock. Discussion involved the creation of the geodata repository for Arkansas and a review of the report outlining the vision of how a repository for the state might be implemented. A committee was formed to draft a request for proposals. Shelby Johnson severed a Chair of this committee. August 20, 1998. 

CAST's Shelby Johnson met with Reginald Wilson of the Arkansas Department of Education to present ArcView project data for school district boundaries, major roads, major cities, major streams, major water bodies, and county boundaries. These data will be used the Arkansas Department of Education to track programs such as district report cards, lunch programs, grant programs, districts with networks, etc. August 20, 1998.  

Attended the Kansas GIS Standards Task Force meeting to learn how Kansas is implementing statewide GIS standards for horizontal geodetic control and addressing standards. August 27, 1998. 

Participated in Arkansas GIS Users Forum meeting at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. Topics of discussion were the 1999 Forum conference, the Forum's role in the Land Information Board, and election of officers. September 1, 1998. 

Participated in Arkansas State Land Information Board meetings in Little Rock. The Board voted to adopt FGCD metadata content standard sections 1 and 7. Several strategy sessions were held on Board funding, policy directives, and critical geodata to be developed. Sessions on the legislative process were conducted. The Repository Objectives Committee presented a report regarding the Technical Objective document. September 22, 1998. 

Attended U.S. IGUG Conference in Ames, Iowa. Highlights included discussions on legislative redistricting, a presentation on the National Association of Counties/Intergraph GIS Starter Kit for counties, the announcement of the "Inside GeoMedia" book scheduled to be published in 1998, and the release GeoMedia campus-wide licensing protocols. October 4-6, 1998.

Participated in the Vision 2010 Strategy Visioning seminar in Little Rock. Numerous presentations were given about community development projects within the Vision 2010 communities. Information on the NACO/Intergraph GIS Starter Kit was provided. October 9-10, 1998. 

Met with Union County Rural Development, Smackover Creek Coop, in El Dorado to provide information about using GIS and GPS technologies to track reclamation progress in the Samckover Creek watershed using bio-remediation techniques to desalinize the soils through planting of hybrid vegetation that can use salty soils. This area was polluted by old oil fields when a reservoir was hit and the brine at the top of the domes was left to runoff or was burned in sludge ponds creating a barren environment. December 3-4, 1998.

Limp, Fredrick

Participated in the final Arkansas GAP in-state cooperators meetings at the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commissions in Little Rock. Participating cooperators included the Arkansas Forestry Commission, Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, University of Arkansas-Little Rock, Nature Conservancy Field Office, US Forest Service, and University of Arkansas-Monticello. An overview of the Arkansas GAP project final report CD-ROM set and on-line web pages (www.cast.uark.edu/gap/) was provided. July 30, 1998.

Served on NASA Proposal Review Panel. Dr. Fred Limp served as a member of a panel reviewing some 77 proposals submitted to NASA for support for "Regional Application Centers." NASA plans to provide ca. $800,000 per year for three years to the centers. Key points stressed at this Washington, D.C., event included proposal development, solutions, end user involvement, good metrics, and budget logic. August 31-September 2, 1998.

Provided a presentation to a conference attended by regional director of Math and Science schools in 13 states. Dr. Limp talked about spatial technologies and how these technologies could be used in their science curriculum. This conference was hosted by the Arkansas Math and Science School in Hot Springs. Traveled to Biloxi, Mississippi, to participate in Partners in Flight/The Nature Conservancy North American Bird habitat mapping project planning. A workshop is being planned for Partners in Flight members on work being done on bird conservation and efforts at creating GIS habitat maps for those plans encompassing the U.S. and parts of Canada. January 28-31, 1999.

 

Williamson, Malcolm

Assisted with the Howler Project investigations in Hacienda la Pacifica, Costa Rica, sponsored by the Primate Center, Duke University. This data will be used to further develop applications of GIS tools for three-dimensional analysis of primate tooth wear and morphology relative to diet. July 4-August 3, 1998. 

Attended the Source Water Assessment Citizens Advisory Committee meetings at the Arkansas Department of Health in Little Rock. Topics of discussion included the status of the assessment model. August 6, 1998.
