Model Development and Historic Preservation

Arkansas possesses one of the richest concentrations of rock art in eastern North America. The Narrows rock shelter was chosen as the focus for a project designed to create a scaled 3D representation of the site and setting as it exists today. The Optech ILRIS 3D laser scanner allows us to acquire an exact 3D replica of any object or scene. This can provide us with a "digital copy" of the various depleting resources, sites, artifacts in archeology that may not be around for people to view in the future. These digital representations are providing us with new means of "preserving" today's archeological sites. The model was graphically enhanced and an animated fly through was created in SoftImage. A report on the Narrows rock art modeling project can be read here.
