Archaeological Research

Recording archaeological artifacts in three-dimension using digital photogrammetry

As part of this project, CAST developed a method and a low-cost photographic system using 35mm cameras which allow to record archaeological artifacts three-dimensionally.

Assessment of the effects of agriculture on cultural resources in America

This project evaluated, for the continental United States, the potential effects of agriculture on cultural resources and assessed the role USDA soil conservation programs may have on them.

Porting of the DELOS archeological object database management system to FoxPro for MS Windows

CAST was contracted by the Corps of Engineers to port the DELOS database management system designed to inventory archaeological objects from its native UNIX environment to FoxPro for MS Windows.

An osteological database for bioarcheologists

Standards for collecting data from human skeletal remains were developed at the Field Museum of Natural History. Using these standards, CAST developed an application to assist osteologists in building a national osteological data archive.

Archaeological overview of the North Central United States

This project consisted in the compilation of an archaeological synthesis of the North Central United States which addressed topics such as paleoenvironment, archaeological investigations, and bioarchaeology.

National Archeological Database (NADB)

The National Archaeological Database provides a comprehensive inventory of more than 150,000 archaeological reports resulting from federally sponsored cultural resource management projects.

Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)

This on-going effort serves via the Web, the text of the latest Federal documents related to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act.

Our site also hosts information posted by the University of Arkansas's Anthropology faculty:

Origins and evolution of human diet (Dr. Peter Ungar)

Standardized Osteological Database (Dr. Jerry Rose)

Historical Preservation

Developing a software to assist historic preservation agencies

CAST and the National Park Service are assessing the need for a standardized data management system for the Alabama Historical Commission and the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. Based on this information, CAST will develop a database management software.

Creating a master plan for the Honey Springs Battlefield, Rentiesville, OK

In continuation of CAST's research efforts with the American Battlefield Protection Program, a Geographic Information System was coupled with traditional planning techiques to develop a park "master plan". The result of this collaborative effort between Landscape Architects and GIS/GPS was a planning guideline for the next 5 to 10 years for the, currently, undeveloped battlefield.

Creating a master plan for the Prairie Grove Battlefield, AR

As a result of previous GIS modelling of the battlefield, Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism (ADPT) officials, realized the need for a formal master plan for the expansion of the existing state park. CAST facilitated the planning process by applying GIS technology to analyze the battlefield and its attributes objectively.
