Unix Systems
CAST uses a variety of flavors of UNIX at the University of Arkansas. We current host 14 Terrabytes of total UNIX storage in a variety of configurations of RAID-0, RAID-1, RAID-5, and RAID-10 based on the final purpose of the storage. We make heavy use of SAMBA under Solaris and Linux to take advantage of the improved performance and cost savings

Solaris Systems
CAST’s partnership with Sun Microsystems has been extensive and involved Sun designating CAST a Center of Excllence in GeoComputation. Sun Enterprise Class systems played a central role in the award-winning Geostor project and, later, the University of Arkansas Spatial Library. Sun’s Enterprise class servers have always played a major role in infrastructure support and research capabilities. Serving large databases and imagery requires the throughput of these Enterprise class servers and fibre connected fast disk arrays.

Slackware Systems
CAST also heavily leverages the stability and flexibilty of Slackware Linux. We maintain several storage servers mainly accessed via windows clients, and several application servers hosting various GNU applications. Slackware Linux has also been used to successfully repurpose several servers, which saves money as well as breathes new life into older equipment.

OpenBSD Systems
CAST maintains an OpenBSD server with around 300 gigabytes of RAID-5 ftp storage. OpenBSD was chosen due to its highly secure nature and some of the special requirements of CAST filesharing. With the highly collaborative atmosphere at CAST, we frequently host projects with contributors in many countries. Many projects require accounts for non-CAST users or special FTP sites created for specific projects. CAST relies on PureFTPD for its main FTP server, due to its highly secure and highly configurable bandwidth controls.
