CAST maintains a variety of Trimble mapping-grade GPS receivers with accuracies ranging from 2-5 meter to sub-foot. These devices support software such as ESRI's ArcPad and Trimble's TerraSync which allow efficient and sophisticated positional and attributional data collection.
These GPS receivers are all used in the GEOS 4593 course, offered annually in the Fall semester.
This equipment is available for checkout by faculty, staff, and students of the university working on internally or externally funded research. While these devices are relatively straightforward to use, potential users must either take the GEOS 4593 course or a three-hour short course offered by CAST on a regular basis, or may demonstrate proficiency from previous experience.
Currently, for high-precision mapping, CAST has two Trimble GeoXH Handheld receivers, which deliver sub-foot (30 cm) GPS accuracy. The GeoXH represents the current state-of-the-art in ruggedized, handheld GPS technology.
For more general mapping applications, CAST has five Trimble GeoXM Handheld receivers, which deliver a solid 1- to 3-meter accuracy. Like the GeoXH, these units provide 8-hour battery life in a tough, easy to manage package.
Both the GeoXM and GeoXH can be used with an external antenna that has a magnetic base, enabling easy mounting on vehicles and other surfaces.
CAST also has two Trimble GPS Pathfinder Pro XRS receivers, which can deliver real-time beacon-corrected sub-meter accuracy. Although the Pro XRS is not in a single handheld package, it is well suited to large data-collection efforts, with the advantage of a full handheld keyboard.
In order to meet the accuracy figures quoted here, differential correction of collected data must be performed using a mapping-grade base station. CAST, in cooperation with Development Consultants Inc. of Fayetteville, AR, maintains an FTP site to provide Base Station differential correction files for GPS users in Arkansas and the surrounding region. DGPS data can be obtained at the following, CAST maintained, ftp site: ftp://130.184.75.105/recent. Those using Trimble Pathfinder Office software will find CAST listed as a download site in the "Internet Search" option of the "Differential Correction" module.
