OVERVIEW: Bruce Gorham is a remote sensing specialist at CAST. For the past seventeen years Mr. Gorham's work has focused on the design and implementation of satellite remote sensing-based land-use analysis projects. His duties at CAST include remote sensing project management, methodology research and development, proposal preparation, and the training and supervision of graduate students workers and hourly staff. Through the AmericaView program, he performs outreach and educational activities designed to inform the public, at all levels of government as well as private sector and NGOs, about the benefits of remote sensing. Mr. Gorham has taught two upper-level university courses: Introduction to GPS, and Digital Remote Sensing.

PROFESSIONAL HISTORY:

Current Position (1993 - Present), Research Assistant, Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies at the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville.

  • Serves as project manager for the Arkansas Comprehensive Land-use Land-cover mapping project. This project, funded in part by the Arkansas Natural Resources Commission, maintains current land-use/land-cover data for the state of Arkansas. Maps, derived from Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 7 ETM+ satellite imagery were produced in 2000, 2004, and 2006.
  • Project manager on the ArkansasView project. This project, funded by the U.S. Geological Survey, focuses on expanding remote sensing and GIS research through outreach and education. 2001-Present.
  • CAST's principle contact person for remote sensing and GPS technologies. Duties include: responding to user questions, filling special data requests, and performing outreach and educational activities such as workshops and lectures.
  • Team remote sensing scientist on the NASA, SIAM-SERVIR Central America Project: Land-cover mapping component: Project goal was to produce an accurate and consistent land-use, land-cover map for all of Central America for the years 1980, 1990, and 2000. Mr. Gorham performed all image processing on MODIS and Landsat data. He also performed all image classifications, and helped design the change detection algorithm for carbon flux models.
  • Developiong automated watershed delineation from sampling site points.
  • Developing Terrestrial Habitat modeling techniques with high resolution CIR aerial imagery

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Arts: History and Political Science, Henderson State University. May 1987
  • Master of Arts: Geography (GIS Emphasis), University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. May 1993.
