Jason Herrmann is an archaeologist that specializes in remote sensing applications in archaeology and historic preservation.  He is particularly interested in using surface mapping and survey, near-surface geophysical techniques, and aerial and satellite remote sensing to understand the relationships between the settlement patterns of ancient humans and their environment. Over the years, Jason has contributed to multi-year projects in the United States, Belize and Bolivia, and is currently involved in ongoing archaeological projects in Turkey, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.

Jason Herrmann’s doctoral research is concerned with developing a model for the relationships between environmental change and settlement patterns in the desert inland of the United Arab Emirates.  To do so, he is integrating data from coordinated archaeological and paleoenvironmental investigations at three archaeological sites in southern Dubai.  These data will help him to reconstruct the ways in which the changing environment may have influenced settlement patterns in the Rub' al-Khali Desert and how ancient desert land-use may have contributed to environmental change.
