Malcolm has worked at CAST since 1993. He currently serves as Geospatial Applications and Education Manager, overseeing a wide diversity of programs ranging from K-12 outreach, to environmental spatial analysis projects, to architectural and archaeological 3D visualization.

Malcolm's projects at CAST include program management of our outreach to the EAST Initiative; high-resolution terrestrial LiDAR scanning at sites in Ostia, Italy, and Amarna, Egypt; GIS-based analysis of wetlands across Arkansas; mapping of wetland classes and subclasses based on the Hydrogeomorphic approach; development of environmental decision-support tools for unconventional natural gas exploration and production; and management and development of the Northwest Arkansas Community Asset and Development Information System.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:
  • Pedagogical approaches for K-12 geospatial education
  • High-resolution 3-D characterization of architectural and archaeological landscapes
  • GIS-based modeling of wetland morphology and function
  • 3-D dental morphometric modeling and analysis
  • Dynamic data modeling techniques in vector GIS

EDUCATION:
  • University of Arkansas, course and thesis work towards MA in Anthropology (current)
  • University of Arkansas, B.A. with High Honors, Anthropology, 1993

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

Research

Research Associate, Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, AR. Develop proposals, design and implement research, encompassing fields ranging from ecological and archaeological research to primary, secondary, and post-secondary education. Team leader of multiple research projects with 8 research staff members. May 1993 - Present.

Specifics from recent years:

  • High Accuracy/Resolution Landscape and Structure Characterization System: Worked with a team of researchers at CAST to develop new methodologies and applications for a range of specialized equipment ranging from 3-D laser scanners to real-time kinematics GPS.
  • Northwest Arkansas Community Asset and Development Information System: Co-managed this joint project with the City of Fayetteville and the EAST program, which developed Web-based geographically-oriented three-dimensional building models of the City of Fayetteville.
  • GIS-Based Natural Resource Analyses for the Ozarks Wetland Planning Region; GIS-Based Mapping of Wetland Classes and Subclasses for the Western Lowlands: Developed and refined methodologies for evaluation of wetlands in these cooperative projects with the Arkansas Multi-Agency Wetland Planning Team.
  • Development of instructional materials and techniques for EAST student training: Led a team of five researchers in developing more effective strategies and materials for instructor-led and student-centered training of middle school, high school, and college students.
  • Development of dynamic analysis methodologies using Intergraph GeoMedia software: Collaborated with several colleagues in designing and testing innovative approaches for dynamic spatial analysis.
  • Development of Web-based instructional methods and materials for EAST students: Developed methodologies and materials to provide self-paced instruction in geospatial technologies for middle school, high school, and college students.
