2010 Field School
During the summer or 2010, the 3D Archaeological Recording and Visualization field school offered through the Cotsen Institute and in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Spatial Technolgies introduced students to a broad range of 3D recording, mapping, animation and visualization methods. Students were given hands-on instruction in these methods in the context of the major Greek archaeological site of Eleusis. Eleusis is world famous as the location of the Eleusian Mysteries – a significant Athenian religious festival - and is located some 14 miles west of Athens opposite the island of Salamis.

During this 5 week field school, the students recorded the site’s extensive architectural remains using terrestrial laser scanning, photogrammetry, GIS and GPS. 3D computer visualization and animation technologies were used to re-create areas of the site. A totally of 100 scans were collected of the site, making Eleusis one of the most extensively scanned sites by CAST.
