There are a number of professional certification options that are available to students pursuing either undergraduate or graduate training in GIS, remote sensing or photogrammetry. Obtaining these certifications provides the student with valuable credentials for employment in many cases. The three options here are (a) University of Arkansas Specialization in GIS, Remote Sensing and Cartography; (2) American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) provisional certification and (3) the GIS Certification Institute's GISP - GIS Professional.
1. University of Arkansas Cartography/Remote Sensing GIS Specialization: This program gives students an opportunity to develop expertise in (1) cartography, map design and computer-assisted map production, (2) remote sensing and image interpretation, including photographic systems, sensor systems, and digital image processing, and (3) geographic information systems, including data sources, analytical techniques, and hardware/software systems. To complete the specialization, a student is required to fulfill certain course requirements.

2. ASPRS Certification
To acquire ASPRS certification the student would take the appropriate exam offered by ASPRS. The UA geoinformatics curriculum is structured to prepare the students for this exam. After successfully completing the exam the student is in a "Provisional" status, and is then required to gain a designated amount of professional experience on the job. When that is completed the individual thens becomes fully certified. ASPRS offers the following:
Details on the ASPRS Certification program is provided at this web site.
3. GIS Professional Certification
The GIS Certification Institute provides certification as a GISP. Qualifications include a combination of training and professional experience. Details on the options and requirements are fully detailed ont he institutes web site at http://www.gisci.org/application_materials.aspx
