An important element of the Center’s activities is making the results of its research available to the wider community, encouraging the use of various geomatics methods in the public and private sectors and assisting agencies, local governments and other groups in selecting and applying appropriate geomatics techniques to issues of public interest.
CAST staff regularly participates in and sponsors demonstrations, tours, talks, workshops, training sessions, and meetings to promote the transfer of geospatial technologies to schools, communities, government agencies, and the private sector. Examples include CAST’s role as host of the National Consortium for Rural Geospatial Innovations in America (RGIS - University of Arkansas, Mid-South), an organization committed to improving the effectiveness of government and the quality of life in rural America by increasing the awareness and use of geospatial technologies for city, county, state, and regional governments. Staff work closely with local government leaders to improve the use and effectiveness of geospatial technologies.
CAST also hosts ArkansasView, a consortium of colleges, universities, K-12 schools, other non-profit organizations, as well as state and federal agencies working within Arkansas, dedicated to widening the use of remotely sensed data, and other earth science data products within the remote sensing and GIS communities of Arkansas. The ArkansasView program is part of the national USGS funded program, AmericaView.
CAST has also developed a strong relationship with the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission over the past 8 years and has been involved in a series of projects, such as the annual collection of high resolution imagery for Washington and Benton counties. An important element of CAST’s outreach efforts are it’s involvement in K-12 education. The Center supports K-12 education through its participation in the EAST Initiative, and the CRATE and CADIS summer programs.
We also work closely with communities and organizations within Arkansas, particularly within the 10 counties of the Crossroads Coalition, a grass-roots organization of institutions and individuals actively seeking to enhance the economic development of their communites.
