Funded by the Natural Resources Conservation Service, this project aimed at evaluating, for the continental United States, the effects of agriculture on cultural resources and at assessing the role USDA soil conservation practices have on them. The results were reviewed by an interdiciplinary team and used to make recommendations for the formulation of Congressional Farm Bill 1995.
Using county-level information such as the Census of Agriculture 1987 and archaeological site/historical property counts by county provided by the State Preservation Officers and the National Park Service, archaeological site distribution on federal and private lands were compared, and correlations between the presence of cultural resources and that of row/broadcast crops were assessed.
