Archaeoinformatics.org, was established as a collaborative organization to design, seek funding for, and direct a set of cyberinfrastructure initiatives for archaeology. Archaeoinformatics.org seeks to coordinate with and, develop interoperability of its own projects with other relevant data-sharing initiatives. It offers to work with professional organizations and federal agencies to promote policies that will foster the development of cyberinfrastructure for archaeology.
As the decision-making body of archaeoinformatics.org, the Steering Committee manages the design, seeks funding for, and directs the development of cyberinfrastructure initiatives in archaeology. It administers central functions necessary for the development and operation of the cyberinfrastructure. It seeks to work with professional organizations to influence relevant policies and to engage the larger community of archaeologists in these efforts. The Steering Committee members include Dr. Keith Kintigh, Arizona State University; Dr. Fred Limp, University of Arkansas; Dr. Dean Snow, The Pennsylvania State University; Dr. Tim Kohler, Washington State University (WSU; email Kohler)
Dr. Jeff Altschul, Statistical Research, Inc.; and Dr. Julian Richards, University of York.
The University of Arkansas serves as the "prime contractor" for the 2008 planning grant. Upon the award sub-contracts were executed with Arizona State University, the Pennsylvania State University, Statistical Research, Inc. and Washington State University. Additionally, Uark is the lead and fiscal agent for travel arrangements for the February meeting in Santa Fe.
Web development and hosting
CAST is responsible for the development, management and hosting of he consortium web site archaeoinformatics.org. The site currently provides background information on the initiative including the objectives, current status, participants and a substantial amount of relevant information including a number of key publications (and links) to relevant articles and books as well as an archive of the consortium's virtual lecture series (see below). As of Jan 31st the video files of the lectures had been downloaded in aggregate 268 times.
Virtual Lecture series
CAST has been responsible for the organization and operation of the Consortium's Virtual Lecture series. The series began on March 26, 2007, prior to the grant award. The website has streaming video of the lecture as well as the original Power Point presentations for each lecture.
