Forest Types

Description: This raster map shows the major forest types within the lower Mississippi Valley. Hardwood mixes are found in the northern portions of the Valley, as well in the Oak/Hickory forest of the Ozark uplands. Hardwood/ Pine mixes dominate most of the central and southern portions of the Valley . Bottomland hardwoods such as Cypress are found extensively in the bottomlands of southern Louisiana. Illinois and northern Missouri, as well as the Mississippi alluvial plain, are sparsely forested due to the predominance of agriculture in these areas.
