Selects the top fraction of grid cells with records by richness or range-size rarity (2.7% of total in this example). The term "hotspots" was used originally for seeking areas world-wide that have exceptional concentrations of species richness or narrow endemics, and which face a high degree of threat (Myers 1988, 1990). More recently the term has been applied to the top 5% of areas of exceptional richness (Prendergast et al. 1993). In Worldmap, hotspots are qualified by the scale of either richness or rarity (Williams et al. 1996). The fraction of occupied grid cells to display is user selected. In the illustration below the "toggle zoom" function has been employed to highlight Ecuador and the selected grid cells.
