Department of Energy  - National Energy Technology Laboratory

The National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), part of DOE's national laboratory system, is owned and operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). NETL supports DOE's mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.

NETL implements a broad spectrum of energy and environmental research and development (R&D) programs that will return benefits for generations to come:

- Enabling domestic coal, natural gas, and oil to economically power our Nation's homes, industries, businesses, and transportation ...

- While protecting our environment and enhancing our energy independence.

Environmentally Friendly Exploration and Production (EFD)

Created in 2005, EFD is supported by the U.S. Department of Energy National Energy Technology Laboratory and the energy industry. The growing EFD partnership consists of universities, national laboratories, energy producers and service companies, environmental organizations, and government agencies.

Texas A&M, HARC and TerraPlatforms, along with industry sponsors and stakeholders (NGO's, government agencies, others) operate a program integrating advanced technologies into systems that significantly reduce the impact of petroleum drilling and production in environmentally sensitive areas. The objective is to identify, develop and demonstrate cost effective technologies that reduce environmental tradeoffs and may allow operations in environmentally sensitive areas that are currently off limits, should these areas be opened for development.

A current list of EFD program participants is available here.

University/National Laboratories Alliance Team

The University/National Laboratories Alliance, established as part of the Environmentally Friendly Drilling (EFD) Program, will fund and transfer critical new technologies that can accelerate development of domestic reserves in a safe and environmentally-friendly manner. The research is aimed specifically at technologies that can be used in environmentally sensitive areas that are currently off limits to drilling and production.

Founding members of the Alliance include:

Houston Advanced Research Center

HARC is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization based in The Woodlands, Texas dedicated to improving human and ecosystem well-being through the application of sustainability science and principles of sustainable development. HARC's mission is to move knowledge to action to improve human well-being and the environment.

The Research Partnership to Secure Energy for America (RPSEA)

RPSEA is a non-profit corporation formed by a consortium of premier U.S. energy research universities, industry and independent research organizations.  RPSEA's mission is to provide a stewardship role in ensuring the focused research, development and deployment of safe, environmentally sensitive technology that can effectively deliver hydrocarbons from domestic resources to the citizens of the United States.
