1984 & 1999 Land Use & Land Cover Statistics
The 1999 and 1984 Land Use and Land Cover Classifications for Carroll County are presented in Map Foldouts 5.1 and 5.2.

The areal extent of each land use and land cover class was calculated for the 1999 and 1984 land use and land cover maps as well as the land use and land cover change map 1984-1999. The areas were calculated in both square miles and acres as well as the areal percentage of the map by generating an additional maximum likelihood report for each of the 1999 and 1984 land use and land cover maps and the land use and land cover change map 1984-1999. The statistics for each land use and land cover class incorporated in the 1999 and 1984 land use and land cover maps are listed in Figures 5.1 and 5.2. These figures are based directly on the level II data derived from the image classification techniques employed in this study.

These figures were further summarized, or simplified, into their level I land use and land cover categories. This was accomplished by simply calculating the combined level II category areas into their broader level I category areas. The level I land use and land cover category statistics allow for much quicker and easier quantitative change assessment and analysis. These statistics are further described in Figures 5.3 and 5.4.
