Chapter 2 - Study Area
Physiographic Regions & Description | Population | Agriculture Industry
Carroll County is located in the northwest region of the State of Arkansas. Carroll County is bordered by four additional Arkansas counties: Boone County on the East, Newton and Madison Counties on the South and Southwest, and Benton County on the West. The Northern border is part of the Missouri – Arkansas State Boundary. Three Missouri Counties lie adjacent to Carroll County, Barry, Stone, and Taney Counties. Carroll County’s geomatical location is between 36 Degrees, 7 Minutes and 36 Degrees, 30 Minutes North Latitude and 93 Degrees, 18 Minutes and 93 Degrees, 53 Minutes West Longitude. Carroll County has an area of approximately 641 square miles, 1,663 square kilometers, or 410,079 acres. Its maximum east-west extent is 32 miles and its minimum east-west extent is 14 miles. The maximum north-south extent is 26 miles and the minimum north-south extent is 13 miles. The proceeding map foldout (Map Foldout 2.1) depicts the general landscape features of Carroll County.
It should be noted that the county boundary for Carroll County has officially changed during the time frame considered in this study. This change actually occurred twice, over a two year period in 1995 and 1997. The changes in the boundary are the result of exchanges of land areas between Benton, to the west, and Carroll Counties so that land areas within each county separated by man-made boundaries as a result of the creation of the Beaver Lake reservoir are now reincorporated in order to expedite county road maintenance and implemented 911 service. As a result, most of the data incorporated in this project has not been updated and does not reflect this change. Thus, county area totals in this study may not be consistent with current and more accurate

measures based on the new county boundary. Figure 2.1 portrays the boundary change for Carroll County. The boundary utilized in the classification of the Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery for Carroll County reflects the first change in 1995. Thus, the derived land use and land cover maps for 1999 and 1984 reflect this boundary. No data incorporated in this project reflects the new boundary for Carroll County. Digital data reflecting the new boundary for Carroll County was not available at the time of image classification.
