County Population

Carroll County is a rural county which has experienced moderate population growth. The 1980 National Census calculated a county-wide population of 16,203 persons and was ranked 46th in the state out of 75 counties. One decade later, the 1990 National Census calculated 18,654 persons, which improved the county’s rank to 37th in the state. The county population increased by 15.1%, or 2,451 persons. Based upon the 1990 National Census, Carroll County’s rural population comprises 82.8 % of the total population, or 15,442 persons, and 17.2% of the population, or 3,212 persons, were classified as urban. The resident population of Carroll County per square mile of land in 1990 was 29.43 persons (Arkansas Statistical Abstract, 1998).

The U.S. Bureau of the Census calculated an intercensal estimate for Carroll County in 1998 at 22,534 persons. Over the past eighteen years, that is an increase of 6,331 persons or 39 percent. Figure 2.4 portrays the population increase in Carroll County during this time period. The source of the county populations for each year in Figure 2.4 is an intercensal estimate provided by the U.S. Bureau of the Census.
