In 2004-2005, CAST was funded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) through the Arkansas Geographic Information Office to assist the City of Fort Smith GIS Department with preparing their city-wide data and data servers for inclusion in the USGS National Map project. The goal of The National Map was to provide geospatial data to enhance America's ability to access, integrate, and apply geospatial data at global, national, and local scales. The City of Fort Smith maintained the best available geospatial data for its geographic area. CAST staff assisted in placing the proper style layer descriptors (to insure that the symbology was consistent with that used in The National Map) on the City of Fort Smith’s web mapping service and established protocols required for the USGS to access geospatial data sets on the City’s servers. The data sets included were digital orthophotos (2004), road centerlines, city limit boundaries, address structure points, libraries, hospitals, and schools.
In a secondary task, all of the Fort Smith data involved in this project was loaded into Arkansas' geospatial data clearinghouse, GeoStor. This created a backup copy of the data that would be available in the event of a disaster.
