Geo- Decision Support Services in the OGC Web Services Initiative Requirement Set 3 and Demonstration

On March 14, 2005 The Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies (CAST), proposed contributions to the Geo-Decision Support (GeoDSS) thread of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Open Web Services Initiative Phase 3 (OWS-3).

Geo-Decision Support Services (GeoDSS) provides interoperable access to distributed geospatial web services to aid decision makers in forming, analyzing, and selecting alternatives. In a network-centric environment, information from any source may serve as input to the decision making process. However, the information needed by the decision maker may not be suitable for the issue at hand when in its native format. The actual information needed by the decision maker may be a subset of the information available or a combination of the information elements from a number of information communities. Developing client-side code to merge the data sources can be time-consuming, costly and prone to error. Thus, a more general-purpose solution has been developed.

CAST developed two prototype complementary tools to provide that solution.

  • 1) The Data Aggregation Service (DAS) merges data using a standard WFS interface to clients. The CAST open-source version of the DAS can be used to connect to any vendor WFS. Data can come from many different data sources and will appear to the client as if from a single source. Also, this DAS shows that adding it into the "service-chain" imposes almost no performance penalty.
  • 2) The Schema Mapping and Assembly Tool is used to configure the Data Aggregation Service. This web-based tool allows discovery of Geographic Markup Language (GML) schemas from the registry and the ingestion of the GML schema from the repository.
