The Center provides a full range of Global Positioning System (GPS) services through teaching, outreach, and research. These programs are made possible through the National Consortium for Rural Geospatial Innovations in America (RGIS) Mid-South and the ArkansasView Consortium.
The Geosciences department of the University of Arkansas' Fulbright College of the Arts and Sciences offers an upper-level university course in GPS titled Introduction to GPS. This class is taught by Dr. Jackson Cothren. More information on the course can be found here. In addition the CAST support team for the EAST Initiative has developed very useful on-line courses on the use of GPS and its integration with GIS. These pages can be found here.
In 1992 CAST was designated as a Center of Excellence for "Global Positioning System Mapping Systems: Training and Research" by Trimble Navigation Ltd. In part through this corporate agreements and with support from a 2003-2005 NSF MRI (BCS-0321286) and University fo Arkansas TELE funds, CAST maintains a full suite of GPS mapping and surveying hardware including:
Two Trimble 5700 survey grade receivers with Zypher Geodetic antennas,
One Trimble survey grade 5800 receiver,
One UHF radio for RTK applications
One Trimble 5600 D2 Robot Total Station,
Two Trimble GeoExplorer XH's,
Twenty Juno ST receivers,
Five Trimble GeoExplorer XM's and
Two Trimble ProXR's.
The 5700/5800 equipment is configured to work with the on-campus NetRS base station in real-time kinematic mode via CDMA cell-modems. Trimble Pathfinder Office, TerraSync and ArcPad with GPScorrect is used for mapping applications, while Trimble Geomatics Office and JPL's GYPSY-OASIS II and UNAVCO's TECQ software is used for Surveying/Geodetic applications.
The base station is operated in cooperation with Development Consultants Inc. of Fayetteville, AR, and provides Base Station differential correction files for GPS users in Arkansas and the surrounding region. DGPS data can be obtained at the following, CAST maintained, ftp site: ftp://gps.cast.uark.edu/recent. Those using Trimble Pathfinder Office software will find CAST listed as a download site in the "Internet Search" option of the "Differential Correction" module. More information on the survey grade base station is provided here.
CAST also provides mapping-grade GPS equipment for checkout by faculty, staff, and students of the university. Please read the check out procedures here and complete the checkout form.
