ArkansasView

Who We Are: ArkansasView is a consortium of colleges, universities, K12 schools, other non-profit organizations, as well as state and federal agencies working within Arkansas.  The consortium is dedicated to bringing about the wide application of remotely sensed data, and other earth science data products within the remote sensing and GIS communities of Arkansas.

ArkansasView is part of a larger non-profit organization known as AmericaView, Inc.  AmericaView is a locally controlled and nationally coordinated program with a mission to advance the availability, timely distribution, and widespread use of remote sensing data and technology through education, research, outreach, and sustainable technology transfer to the public and private sectors. AmericaView is comprised of university-led, state-based consortia working together to build a nationwide network of state and local users.  AmericaView supports the goals of the AV Program by further expanding communications networks, facilities, and capabilities for acquiring and sharing remotely sensed data among AmericaView members.  The Consortium is actively working to expand participation in the AV Program to all 50 states.

The Need for ArkansasView: Satellite imagery offers a wealth of information about our planet, but is not being used to its full potential.  The three main reasons for its underutilization are: (1) Citizens have very little knowledge about the technology and how it can be used; (2) The data can be costly and are not always readily accessible; and (3) Using the data requires considerable investments in software, hardware, and training.  These challenges are being addressed through the power of partnerships made possible by ArkansasView and the AmericaView consortium.  Arkansasview is:

  • Delivering informative workshops, seminars, and lectures in schools, businesses, government agencies and other private and public institutions
  • Providing personnel, materials, and facilities for educational training
  • Conducting research to improve remote sensing technology transfer
  • Creating real-time, sustainable data delivery options for emergency response
  • Working to establish closer relationships with software and data vendors in order to obtain group discounts

ArkansasView Goals:  ArkansasView is striving to develop a strong in-state consortium dedicated to advancing the role of remote sensing technology for the benefit of all Arkansans.  We propose an aggressive agenda for realizing the goals of AmericaView within Arkansas through education, research, outreach, and sustainable technology transfer to the public and other non-profit organizations.  Specifically, the goals of ArkansasView are:

  • To broaden the remote sensing data user community in Arkansas by providing useful and inexpensive remote sensing data and data products to the Arkansas View consortium and to anyone with Internet access.
  • To transfer remote sensing technology to educational institutions at all levels, state agencies, and the private sector in Arkansas.
  • To create and maintain effective public education and outreach programs promoting the benefits gained through the use of remote sensing technologies.
  • To provide near-real-time data and data products to a broad user community on an easy-to-use web interface and implement, as much as possible, fully automated RS data processing

Landsat Data Access: Through a partnership with the U.S. Geological Survey, all Landsat data, both historical and new acquisitions, are available, free of charge. Browse and download available Landsat data on the Global Visualization (GLOVIS) viewer, here. ArkansasView also maintains an extensive archive of Landsat MSS, TM, and ETM data (1976-2010). You can access ArkansasView's Landsat archive here.

Members and Member Benefits: ArkansasView is working with it's parent organization AmericaView to from strategic alliances for software and data discounts for members. Currently AmericaView members have access to discounted image processing software from Pixoneer Geomatics and for satellite imagery from SPOT Image.
