Northwest Arkansas Travel Demand Model

Population Change by TAZ

A Travel Demand Model has been developed for the Northwest Arkansas region (Benton and Washington Counties) by the Northwest Arkansas Regional Planning Commission, the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department and with CAST's collaboration. Data and survey information were collected starting  with 2004 and the model was calibrated at the end of 2007.

Northwest Arkansas is one of the most dynamic and economically vibrant areas in the state and also in the country, attracting an increase in population without precedent for the area. The transportation challenges caused by this increase in population are addressed through a comprehensive travel demand model.

Geographic Information Systems were extensively used in developing the structure and mechanisms for deploying the model. The travel demand model’s results and scenarios will play an important role in the decision making process for managing the Northwest Arkansas population increase and the growing economy and infrastructure, while hopefully safe guarding environmentally sensitive areas. New federal regulations require that environmental issues be considered “up front” in developing various future year transportation planning scenarios.
