Room Use Survey System (RUSS)

The Room Use Survey System (RUSS) is a prototype application developed for the University of Arkansas building executives to provide building, floor, and room level detail on how space is allocated in the buildings on campus. As the campus grows and changes continuously, questions about "what is there and how is it used?" are being asked on a daily basis. RUSS was therefore designed in order to aid in the collection of the space distribution and use that would allow managers to make better decisions on how space is distributed.

An online customized database was created through a collaboration effort between Facilities Management and CAST. The building executives can select any building from a list to display information such as the name of the building, its four letter code; the year built, and grosses area. Users can also select individual floors to display plans, or select individual rooms to display data about that room such as net area, departmental assignation, primary occupant, physical use (office, lab, classroom), and academic use (instruction, research, library).

In addition to data management new technologies and solutions on visualizing the information in this database are being explored and tested by CAST (3D and data driven and query based visualizing tools) in order to provide FAMA with a useful and valuable tool in regarding space management on campus.
