The Arboretum Mapping Project is another example of the collaborative projects between Facilities Management Planning Group at the University of Arkansas. The project was designed to locate and identify all trees within the two campus arboreta: the Old Main Arboretum and the Maple Hill Arboretum.
The locations of about 480 trees within the arboreta were collected using a GPS data logger. Attributes such as common and scientific names, the diameter of the tree trunks, and presence of a tag or monument were documented. Click here for a summary table of the tree data. Photographs were also taken of each tree during the survey and hyper-linked to each individual tree. All tree data was incorporated into a GIS system and used in a web mapping application that can be queried along with other datasets (such as aerial photography and roads).
