How do I get into the lab?

Door combinations are available for labs 44 and 103 from Lisa Frye in the GeoSciences offices (Ozark Hall, Rm. 113), and for labs 208 and 209 from Karen Wagner in the CAST offices (Ozark Hall, Rm. 12).

How do I login to a computer?

Students will generally use GACL (or uark.edu) accounts. Your GACL account uses the same login and password as your UARK email account, and uses "GACL" as the domain to log into a Microsoft Windows machine. If your GACL account hasn't been activated, you can do that by resetting your U of A passwords. Go to https://www2.uark.edu/PASSweb/ and select "uark.edu (Dial-up, Mail, Comp, Active Directory, & Jabber)". Note that this will reset passwords for all of these systems - Dial-up, Mail, Comp, Active Directory, & Jabber.

Where do I store my data?

A GACL account comes with a limited amount of server space on comp.uark.edu, but is generally not enough for GIS applications. We can make a folder for your data on one of our servers if a "green" form is filled out. These forms are available from Karen Wagner in Ozark rm. 12. Data on our servers is archived on June 30 each year unless a new form has been filled out since January 1st of that year. When we create your server space, you get an email with instructions telling you the location of your server space, which you can then map a drive to.

You can temporarily store data to the local hard-drive in c:\temp while you're working on it, but be sure to save it to your server space before you log out. Backups are not done on the workstation drives and we routinely re-load the entire machine to update software and fix problems, so data saved locally may be deleted at any time.

All machines have CD/DVD burners so you can make your own backups. More copies of your files in more different locations means less chance of your files being lost forever.

How do I map a drive?

Click "Start", "My Computer", "Tools", and "Map Network Drive". Select the drive letter you want (we usually use Z:), type in the location given to you when your server space was set up (example: \\geos1\jdoe), check the "Reconnect at logon" box, and click "Finish".

How do I set up a printer?

Click “Start”, “Printers and Faxes”, “Add a printer”, “Next”. Insure the button marked “A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer” is selected, and click “Next”. Select “Connect to this printer”, and type the name of the desired printer in the “Name:” box.

Printer names to type in the box are as follows:

\\printer1\208bn-hp4250 is the black and white printer in 208

\\printer1\208cn-hp2500 is the color printer in 208

\\printer1\209bn-hp4250 is the black and white printer in 209

\\printer1\209cn-hp2500 is the color printer in 209

\\printer2\44bn-hp4050 is the black and white printer in 44

\\printer2\44cn-hp4550 is the color printer in 44

\\printer2\103bn-hp4250 is the black and white printer in 103

\\printer2\103cn-hp2500 is the color printer in 103

Where do I get paper or ink for the printers?

Paper and ink for the printers are available in Ozark Hall rm 12 from Karen Wagner.

What if I need help?

If you're having trouble operating the software, contact your instructor.

If you're having trouble with your GACL account, contact Computing Services at 575-7907 or http://askit.uark.edu/

If something in the lab is broken, misconfigured, or otherwise messed up, or you just don't know what catagory your problem fits in, contact the CAST IT staff at help@cast.uark.edu or 575-7907.
