Notes:

  • The Japan Map Center sells both color and monochrome GSI aerial photography. There is color photography of the entire country taken during the period 1974-1978 and additional photography from 1979. Color photos covering the plain areas are available at a mixture of scales from 1:8 000 1:10 000. Color photos covering hilly and mountainous areas are available at a mixture of scales from 1:10 000 to 1:15 000.
  • Additionally, there is color photography available dating from 1979 that covers areas of rapid land use change in the region stretching from the plains of Tôkyô and just north, to the northern portions of Kyûshu. These regions are photographed regularly.
  • There is a variety of monochrome aerial photography beginning with 1:40 000 scale photography of the entire nation taken in 1947-1948, and again in 1964-1968. The 1:40 000 scale aerial photographs were taken for total or partial revisions of the 1:25 000 Topographic Map Series.
  • Larger scale 1:20 000 or 1:25 0000 monochrome photography is available for all coastal and plain areas (1:10 000 in urban areas). It dates back to 1970 with updates at 5 or 10 year intervals.
  • The 1:40 000 scale aerial photographs were taken for total or partial revisions of the 1:25 000 Topographic Map Series.

Scale vs. Actual Distance:
1:8 000: on paper 1cm = 80m on ground
1:10 000: on paper 1cm = 100m on ground
1:15 000: on paper 1cm = 150m on ground
1:20 000: on paper 1cm = 200m on ground
