Notes:
This is a digitization of the 2nd (1987) and 3rd (1992 editions of
the 1:1 000 000 Geological Map of Japan.
There is a 280m x 230m DEM corresponding to each of the 88 sheets
in the 1:200 000 Regional Map series published by the Geographical
Survey of Japan (GSJ) which covers the entire country.
The DEM data was generated through interpolation of raster
transformed vector contour lines scanned from 1:25 000 topographic maps
of the Geographical Survey Institute.
Digital data produced by the Geographical Survey Institute was
adopted and used for a basemap on both the 1992 and 1995 CD-ROMs.
Included on the CD's in raster format are the DEMs, geology,
faults, rivers, density and magnetic susceptibility of rock samples
totalling 28MB. In DLG and ARC/INFO 5.01 export format is data
detailing coastlines, geological units and fault lines totalling 52MB.
There several sets of software included for viewing the data on
X-Windows, NEC PCs, and IBM compatibles.
GSJ is reviewing its copyright rules pertaining to its digital
data. Current copyright and use restrictions of the Geological Survey of Japan include:
- 1. All the geological maps may be resold and other publications such
as bulletins and reports may only be exchanged.
- 2. All the copyrights of the publications belong to the director-
General of the GSJ.
- 3. Permission of the GSJ is necessary if you reprint, or reproduce,

- c. the name of publication in which you are going to cite
the reprint.
- 4. After the publication comes out you are asked to send a copy
of it to GSJ.
You are highly encouraged to contact the GSJ with specific questions regarding copyrights.
GSJ is currently digitizing the geological information found on its
1:200 000 maps. Whether or not DEMs will result is unknown. Plans are
to release the new data on CD-ROM in the near future.
