Digital National Land Information
Romanized Pronunciation: Kokudo Sûchi Jôhô
Coordinate System: Lat/Long equivalent coordinate system for line and point-type features, mesh for others.
Coverage: Entire country
Media: 1.44 MB Floppy Disk for land use type data on 85 floppies to cover the whole of the country, MT for other data types.
Cost: "Individual Pricing"
Released: Late 1980's
Notes:
This database was prepared under a cooperative agreement between
the National Land Agency (NLA) and the Geographical Survey Institute
(GSI).
The project to create the database was begun in 1974.
It is based on a grid system of the country established in 1969.
The original purpose of the project was to supply basic information
on the then present state of the land for the entire country in the form
of digital data.
The purpose of the data was to serve as an information source for
national and regional land use planning.
Source material included topographic maps, land use maps,
aerial photography, observation data, statistical data, and data from
various registers.
This data is not available to the general public. It is intended
for use by government administrators and university researchers.
Some of the usage restrictions that may apply to the
Digital National Land Information database are listed below.
The user is strongly advized to contact either the
Japan Map Center or the
Geographical Survey Institute with specific questions regarding usage
restrictions. There is a publication entitled
Kokudo Sûchi Jôhô Goryô ni Attate no Genshu Jikô (written in Japanese) to which you may be referred. It details Sûchi Jôhô usage rules.
- 1) If you find error data you are requested to inform the Japan
Map Center.
- 2) If you have an idea for use of the data you are asked to inform
the JMC.
- 3) The words "Kokudo Sûchi Jôhô" must appear
somewhere on any product resulting from the use of the data.
- 4) After purchase of the data if you decide that you would like to
use the data for a specific purpose you must file an application for
permission to use the data. If and when you receive permission you may
not use the data for any other purpose.
- 5) You may not give copies of the data to anyone.
- 6) Once permission is granted to use the data for the applied for
purpose the permission is good for one year. If you wish to use the
data a year after the original application you must reapply for
permission.
Land use information was derived from vegetation boundaries on GSIs
1:25 000 Topographic Map series, the land use map series published by
GSI, color aerial photography from NLA and GSI, and related sources.
The land use theme consists of 15 categories: Paddy Field, Dry
Field, Orchard, Other Tree Plantation, Forest, Wasteland, Area for
Housing A, Area for Housing B, Main Traffic Route Zone, Lake and Marsh,
River Area A, River Area B, Beach, Sea, Other. Areal information on
land use is included.
Original scanning resolution of the land use information was
0.4mm x 0.4mm. Land use was decided for a 10 x 10 cell group using
the (3,3), (3,8), (8,3), (8,8) cells within each group. It is unclear
what sampling method was used.
Demonstration software, "FD Map Raster Plus" is also on sale and
must be purchased separately.
There are restrictions on the use of certain data types.
Each data set corresponds to a 1:200,000 Regional Topographic Map.
Documentation is in Japanese.
