The information below was compiled from a variety of sources, including correspondence from various individuals and associations, article footnotes, United Nations reports, directories, bibliographic literature databases, and URLs found using various Internet search engines. It has not been substantiated by any widespread survey. In many cases inferences have been made. Some of the information is minimal at best but represents a starting point for further research, perhaps a full-blown survey. No significant attempt has been yet made to verify any of the information. The list below includes institutions where research or instruction in one or more of the mapping sciences is, or is thought to have occurred in the recent past.
It is somewhat difficult to rationalize making a comparison of Japanese education in the mapping science disciplines to that in North America based on a simple count of the number of courses being taught. In Japan, the disciplines of GIS, GPS, remote sensing and computer cartography, generally are not taught as the center piece of a course of instruction, as a detached entity. Instead, instruction is primarily confined to short lectures scattered throughout the school year. Indeed , it is questionable whether they are even considered disciplines. "Tools" comes closer to conveying a sense of how they are regarded, but the instruction doesn't center on the theory. Instead, the tools (i.e., technology, techniques, computer software, hardware and other instruments) are "applied" in well established disciplines such as Civil Engineering.

The Media Center is for use by students and researchers. Computing facilities include desktop as well mainframe platforms. GIS and GIS-related software on-hand includes ARC/INFO and Oracle. The Arc/Info facilities are meant mainly to generate in-house GIS databases and are for use primarily by faculty and graduate students. Currently the Center is more of a lab facility.
