1:2,500 National Large-scale Map

Romanized Pronunciation: Ni sen go hyaku bun no ichi no kokudo kihonzu
Language: Japanese
Notes:
  • The Geographical Survey Institute has produced 1:2,500 scale maps but only for limited areas. Local governments are responsible for preparing large scale maps for their urban planning areas.
  • These maps are used mainly as base maps for planning and management of public works of the central and local governments.
  • The most commonly produced of the National Large-scale maps (1:5 000, 1:2 500, 1:1 000, 1:500).
  • Became standardized in 1975.
  • Data for these maps are obtained through photogrammetric surveys purformed by the Geographical Survey Institute. Local governments then perform steroplotting, map compilation and drafting and revisions in accordance with the provisions of the Urban Planning Law.
  • Cyclic aerial photography at three-year intervals for urban areas and five-years for other others is undertaken as part of the national large-scale mapping project.
  • There is a minimum of generalization of building and house footprints.
  • In 1983, the GSI began compilation work for the 1:10 000 scale topographic maps using existing 1:2 500 scale maps.
  • At least up until the early 90s in most cases pen and ink were used to create these maps.
  • In the late 80s experimentation into the use of Computer Mapping software to produce these maps was undertaken. It is the intent of GSI to produce these maps using digital methods.
  • Some of the maps are made using digital methodology and some are produced using analog methods. Digital data is not available to the public.
  • The author has not yet confirmed but has inferred that the digital 1:2,500 GSI maps are of Tôkyô and in ARC/INFO format.

Scale vs. Actual Distance: On paper 1cm = 25m On ground
Projection: Transverse Mercator using plane rectangular coordinates
