300,000 Dependent...

Located in the Northwest Arkansas, Beaver Lake is the primary source of fresh water for approximately 300 thousand people. In fact, 1 in 8 people in Arkansas get their water supply from Beaver Lake. The four main water suppliers of Beaver Lake include the Beaver Water District, Carroll-Boone Water Association, Boone-Washington Water Association, and Madison County Water Association. The population in the Beaver Lake Watershed continues to grow each year which means the demand placed on the reservoir is increasing. The lake (and the water quality) is affected by everything happening in the entire watershed.

...and growing

Since population and development of land is only expected to increase, so will the demand for water.

From 2000 to 2001, Northwest Arkansas’s population grew from 311,121 to 322,408. As a result of this increase, records show that treated effluent, such as liquid waste, is pumped daily into Beaver Lake from Fayetteville’s wastewater treatment facility. Higher population pressure causes greater challenges to provide clean water. To insure that the increasing land-use and development do not negatively impact the watershed, Beaver Lake must be cared for.

A Promise for Tomorrow

The CADIS team of 2005 is providing data to help the Beaver Water District protect the Beaver Lake watershed. Our goal is to provide current information on the watershed by using geographic information systems. Through maps and reports we hope to provide Beaver Water District the necessary information to enact land use regulations and laws that will protect Beaver Lake. Once active, these zoning requirements and imposed regulations will ensure that water quality deterioration will become another speed bump we have passed as Northwest Arkansas continues to grow. Remember knowledge is power; Help keep a strong promise for tomorrow’s generation.
