A GIS Example: Identifying Potential Landfill Locations

Description:
The Four-County Northwest Arkansas Regional Solid Waste Management District requested CAST to conduct a GIS study to see if there were suitable areas within Northwest Arkansas to locate a regional landfill.

The area includes Benton,
Carroll, Madison,
and Washington counties.

The District provided the criteria for landfill siting. CAST provided the data, and analysis based on the District's information to create large format maps to be used in the decision making process. Additionally, the Center provided all the resulting data from the analysis to a private contractor hired by the District to carry out further detailed studies of this regional issue.

Criteria provided by the Four-County Northwest Arkansas Regional
Solid Waste Management District:

1. No landfills within 500 feet of water intake sites.

2. No landfills within 300 feet of incorporated areas

3. No landfills within 2 miles of designated streams

4. No landfills within 10,000 feet of airports

5. No landfills within 12 miles of existing landfills

Maps 1 through 5 showed in red all the areas which did not satisfy the individual criteria for locating a landfill. Using a GIS, it is now possible to analyze several of these criteria simultaneously.

This maps shows in red all the areas which are not suitable based on criteria 1 through 4

If "proximity to existing landfills" is taken into account as well, one can see that most of the four-county area is unsuitable for a new landfill.
