The top layer of soil horizons commonly sees enrichment of the ferrimagnetic minerals magnetite and maghemite. The presence of magnetite in soils has been viewed as inorganic in origin. Living magnetic bacteria are reported in the A horizon of a well-developed Bavarian soil. It is suggested that they and their fossils contribute to soil magnetism. Summary by NADAG staff.
