Aerial photographic studies, coupled with archaeological excavations, have documented portions of a palisade which is believed to have encircled the central portion of the Cahokia site. Electromagnetic surveys were employed by the author during 1987 and 1988 to locate sections of this Central Palisade. These surveys also produced information on possible bastion locations and other prehistoric and historic features situated near the palisade trenches. Excavation data, available for two of the five areas surveyed, provided direct confirmation of the geophysical surveys, used in conjunction with minimal excavation, are an appropriate method for further exploration of the Central Palisade and other palisades at the Cahokia site.

A partial survey of Cutler Park was conducted using two proton precession magnetometers. The purpose of the survey was to locate magnetic anomalies caused by subsurface features associated with the homestead of Morris Cutler. One anomaly was identified and subsequently verified by excavation as a cultural feature.
