In May 1997, the National Park Service sponsored a workshop on "Non-Destructive Investigative Techniques for Cultural Resource Management" at Fort Scott National Historic Site, Kansas. The course was designed to provide a practical application of non-destructive techniques available for the identification and evaluation of archaeological properties. During the course of the workshop, a seismic test was conducted along line E20. This seismic test readily estimated the depth of bedrock at about 1 m at this site; nearby excavations suggest that this is the correct depth. The seismic test also indicated that there could be small undulations in the depth of bedrock, and this is also reasonable. It is almost certain that the privy pits at this site would be readily located by a seismic survey.
