A Geophysical investigation to determine the location of unmarked graves was conducted at Walton Cemetery located at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey by Geotechnical Laboratory, and U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station from May 6th to 10th in 1994. The methods employed consisted of magnetic, electromagnetic, and ground penetrating radar. Walton Cemetery is located in the southeast section of the Arsenal and dates back to the late 1700's. The geophysical survey was conducted in conjunction with archaeological field survey, mapping, and archival research for the Walton burial ground. The location of a majority of the graves is unknown and it is desired to determine their location for historical and cultural resource management purposes. The rocky nature of the soil made burial identification difficult. The results of the geophysical survey can not confirm locations of possible graves as indicated by archaeological work because the anomalies and possible grave locations do not have strong correlations.
