Abstract/Summary:

Project Name: Fort Crawford Cemetery;

Reference: Charles, Mona C. (2003) Report on the Geophysical Survey of the Fort Crawford Cemetery, Montrose County, Colorado.

A geophysical survey of a two acre parcel of land south of Montrose, Colorado, in Montrose County, was undertaken by the Department of Anthropology at Fort Lewis College for Centuries Research, Inc. The survey was conducted over a three-day period from October 17 through October 19, 2003. The purpose of this survey was to determine the presence of a historic cemetery within the survey area. Two geophysical survey instruments were used on this project: a Geoscan Research FM 36 gradiometer and a Geoscan Research RM15 resistance meter. A three person field crew from Fort Lewis College under the direction of Mona C. Charles conducted the survey, which was funded by the Colorado Historic Fund. The results of both surveys demonstrated the presence of a rectangular anomaly that most likely represents the remains of the cemetery. Linear anomalies that may represent ditches and roads were also identified by both instruments. Geologic anomalies and feataures of unknown origins appear in the data as well. Limited subsurface testing is recommended to determine the source of the geophysical anomalies.
