North American Database of Archaeological Geophysics

Abstract/Summary:

Project Name: Fort Caspar (48NA209), WY;

Reference: De Vore, S. L. (1998). Geophysical Investigations of the Western Part of Fort Caspar Park, Natrona County, Wyoming. National Park Service, Intermountain Support Office, Denver, Colorado. Prepared for the Office of the State Archaeologist, Laramie, Wyoming.

During the week of July 20-29, the National Park Service and Wyoming Office of the State Archaeologist staff with volunteers from the Caspar Chapter of the Wyoming Archaeological Society conducted magnetic gradient and electromagnetic conductivity surveys at Fort Caspar Park in Natrona County, Wyoming. Sixty-five 20 x 20 meter grids were investigated during the ten-day session. The survey was located along the western half of the City of Casper park unit. Anomalies identified during the magnetic survey included a number of buried water and utility lines, the remains of a demolished house and streets, and artifact scatters. The conductivity data also indicated the presence of the buried water and utility lines as well as large metal artifacts. Both geophysical techniques provided complementary data on the urban disturbances within the project area. The magnetic gradient data also provided information on the extent of historic artifact scatters in the project area.
