Abstract/Summary:

Project Name: The Garden Coulee Site

Reference: http://www.cr.nps.gov/mwac/fous/garden_coulee/geo_invest.htm

Geophysical Investigations of the Garden Coulee Site were initiated in the summer field season of 2001. Midwest Archaeological Center (MWAC) Contracted Archaeophysics LLC to perform the surveys using Geoscan Research Resistance and Magnetic Instruments. A Geoscan Research FM36 Fluxgate Gradiometer was used to collect the the magnetic field gradient data where 4 samples were taken per meter every .5 meters. Later grids were surveyd with a transect interval of 1 meter, but with no apparent comprimise of data interpratbility. A Geoscan Research RM15 Resistance Meter with a PA5 probe array was used for the resistance survey. 2 samples were taken per meter with 1 meter intervals between transects. The combination of data was to be used along with pedestrian survey data in addressing questions about site integrity, site limits, and intra-site patterning. The investigation identified geophysical anomalies interpreted as archaeological features.
