The Chucalissa Exhibits

Chucalissa gif Chucalissa, a Choctaw Indian word meaning "abandoned house", was occupied from A.D. 1100 to about 1500. A part of the site has been made into an outdoor museum with reconstructed houses, corn crib, and a public building. Some of the houses have life size exhibits depicting life in the prehistoric village. Archeological excavations consists of a long trench showing a cross section of the village deposits.

The indoor museum displays material recovered from the site and other sites in the southeast, lifeways of the people who occupied the site, and temporary exhibits. A slide presentation introducing the visitor to the site and the prehistory of the area is available in the auditorium. Choctaw Indians act as guides and provide opportunities to view traditional craftwork activities.
