Description of Data Sources

USFS - This database of US forest cover types was created by the US Forest Service from AVHRR satellite imagery at a 1 km resolution.  Metadata and Database are available here.

USGS - This database of US land cover types was created by the US Geological Survey from Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite data at 1 km resolution and 30 meter resolution and mapped in the Albers Conic Equal Area projection, NAD 83.   30 meter database available here. 1 km database available here.

Canadian - This database of Canadian vegetion cover types was created by the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing from AVHRR satellite imagery at a 1 km resolution.  Database and metadata are available here.

Managed Lands - This database of federal and state land ownership was created by the Remote Sensing Research Unit in the Department of Geography at the University of California-Santa Barbara and is presented at 1 km resolution.  Database and metadata are available here.

Roads - This database of US roads was created by the Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics.   Downloadable maps and metadata are available at this site.
